My messages are not being read out loud.

My messages are not being read out loud.

Here are some troubleshooting tips to solve this issue.
  • Ensure that Settings > Voice and Audio > Read messages automatically is set in settings, and that the messaging app is enabled under Select messaging apps
  • If using Android 6.0 or higher, ensure AutoMate is granted the SMS permission in Android settings > Apps > AutoMate > Permissions.
  • Ensure Text-to-Speech is working on your device. You can check by tapping the battery icon on the top right and having the battery percentage read back to you.
  • Ensure AutoMate has been granted Notification Listener access.
  • Restart your device.
*Note: Hangouts requires the Wear OS app to be installed to receive notifications. You do not need to own an Android Wear device, or even launch the app once it's installed.

Some SMS apps, such as Textera or Verizon Messages, are not compatible with AutoMate when they are set as the default SMS app. Incoming messages are not received by AutoMate when these apps are set as the default.
