Why does starting navigation launch an external navigation app?

When using AutoMate Maps (Settings > Maps > Default Navigation App > AutoMate Maps), the entire navigation experience is integrated within AutoMate. However, if any other navigation apps are chosen, AutoMate will attempt to launch this app and automatically search for the destination within the preferred navigation app. 

The steps below show the typical flow when using a navigation app that's not AutoMate maps. 
Step 1: Select default navigation app
